- Description
- Switched-capacitor power converters (SC converters for short) have found wide applications in portable equipment and low power appliances. This research aims at implementing a novel switch-capacitor power converter as an integrated circuit (IC) to reduce size and weight. Capacitors for energy transfer are large (>10uF) and will be connected externally, while all the switches and the controller will be integrated. This converter employs a quasi-switch technique which reduces input current ripple and has been realized successfully using discrete components. The IC implementation will enhance the performance of the converter by using closed-loop control and adding self-start and shutdown circuitry. Stability analysis with the feedback circuitry included will be performed. New topologies and switching stratedies in enchancing efficiency will also be investigated. The cascade of a low dropout (LDO) regulator to the SC converter will be realized and measurement on noise performance will be made and compared to that of a switching converter + LDO combination.
